What Are NSN Numbers?
NSN stands for NATO Stock Number, a standardized 13-digit code used internationally to identify and manage items of supply. These numbers are assigned by the NATO Codification System (NCS) and are recognized by all NATO countries, making logistics and procurement more efficient and uniform across military and government agencies.
Structure of an NSN
An NSN is divided into three main parts: the four-digit Federal Supply Class (FSC), the two-digit country code of the NATO National Codification Bureau (NCB) that assigned it, and a seven-digit non-significant number. For example, NSN 5310-01-234-5678 breaks down as FSC 5310 (hardware), NCB code 01 (USA), and a unique serial number.
Why NSNs Matter
NSNs streamline procurement, reduce duplication, and help track inventory across global supply chains. Whether you’re managing spare parts for aircraft, vehicles, or communication equipment, having an NSN ensures you’re getting exactly the right item, no matter the supplier or location.
