Tritium Sights: Self-Powered Sight Illumination

Tritium Sights: Self-Powered Sight Illumination

Sight Illumination systems using Tritium and LED technology provide quick, instinctive aiming solutions for handguns, ensuring visibility in all lighting conditions without requiring batteries or maintenance. These illuminated sights offer optimal performance during both daytime and nighttime operations.

The Trilux Tritium H3 Sight Illumination provides three solid aiming dots that remain identical in appearance under all conditions, while the Hyper-Bright Tritium sights offer a contrasting colored ring front sight for faster target acquisition in low light. For continuous use, the Evergreen LED Illuminated Sight delivers a bright and clear three-dot sight picture with no switches, designed to last for five years of continuous operation.

Features

  • Always ready: there is no switch to find or turn on, so the sight picture is there the moment the pistol is drawn.
  • Same sight picture by day and night: the shooter aligns the same dots in daylight and in darkness, so one aiming technique serves every light level.
  • Tritium or LED: choose self-powered tritium (Trilux, Hyper-Bright) or LED illumination (Evergreen) to suit your policy on radioactive materials.
  • Kind to night vision: tritium dots glow softly enough to leave the dark-adapted eye intact; a low-brightness Trilux version is available for secure use.
  • Fast front sight pickup: the Hyper-Bright and Evergreen front sights carry a large coloured ring that draws the eye to the front sight.
  • Any climate, any weather: tritium light sources are unaffected by humidity and temperature and keep working underwater.
  • No maintenance: no batteries, bulbs or moving parts; Trilux sights give a continuous illuminated service life of 10 years.

What are pistol night sights?

Pistol night sights are iron sights with a light source set into the front and rear sight. The shooter aligns three glowing dots in the dark exactly as three painted dots are aligned by day. Plain or painted sights fade into the background as the light drops, which is when many defensive and military engagements happen.

Tritium sights, the most common type, use tritium vials: small sealed glass capsules coated inside with phosphor and filled with tritium gas. The low-energy beta particles from the gas make the phosphor glow, with no power source at all. LED sights do the same job with a sealed light source and no radioactive material. Three sight systems
TRILUX TRITIUM
Three tritium dots, made with Betalight sources. 10-year illuminated service life, rated -60 °C to +80 °C.
HYPER-BRIGHT TRITIUM
Tritium dots with a large green, yellow or orange ring around the front dot for daylight and dusk.
EVERGREEN LED
Green LED front sight with a coloured ring. Rated for five years of continuous operation, no radioactive material.
Tritium has a half-life of 12.3 years, so a tritium sight dims gradually. An LED sight keeps its brightness until its rated life ends.

Tritium Sights for Aiming When the Light Fails

Painted dots help in daylight but disappear in darkness, and a weapon light gives away the shooter’s position. Self-luminous sights stay visible without projecting any light, and the shooter keeps the same sight alignment in every condition.

Betalight sources have been used for over 600 NATO stock numbers, including gun sights, mortar sights and aiming post lamps, and the same tritium technology lights our full range of tritium lights. For units that cannot hold radioactive materials, the Evergreen LED sight gives the same three-dot picture without tritium.

Versions and Ordering

Sights are supplied as a front sight, a rear sight or a full set. Hyper-Bright and Evergreen front sights have a green, orange or yellow ring; the yellow Hyper-Bright ring is phosphorescent and glows after exposure to light. Rear sights come without illumination or with a green illuminated dot.

When ordering, state the pistol make, model and generation, the sight system, the ring colour and the rear sight option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choose by your rules on radioactive materials and by the service interval you want. Tritium sights need no power source of any kind, but they contain a radioactive gas, and their brightness falls as the tritium decays (see how long tritium lasts). The Evergreen LED sight contains no radioactive material and, according to the manufacturer, no hazardous materials. It is rated for five years of continuous operation, so plan a replacement cycle for it.

It depends on the light. In full darkness every version shows clearly visible dots. In daylight and at dusk, when a small tritium dot is washed out by ambient light, the large coloured ring on the Hyper-Bright and Evergreen front sights is far easier to see; the manufacturer describes the Evergreen LED as super bright. When light discipline matters or the shooter also uses night vision devices, choose the low-brightness Trilux version instead.

Night sights are fixed sights made for a specific pistol, so each set is ordered for one make and model. Most fit standard dovetail cuts or Glock-style sight cuts. Evergreen sets are available for pistols from makers such as Glock, SIG Sauer, CZ, Heckler & Koch and Beretta, and fit most standard holsters. Send us the pistol models in your inventory and we confirm which sets are available. Have the sights fitted by an armourer and check the zero afterwards.

Yes. Tritium is a radioactive material, so import, transport and disposal follow national rules, which differ by country. The beta particles cannot pass through the skin and the gas is sealed in glass, so an intact sight poses no exposure risk. Do not open or drill a sight, and return worn or damaged sights through regulated channels. See our guide to tritium safety, and ask us about the paperwork for your country when you order.
