What is a CHMSL with Camera?
A CHMSL (centre high-mounted stop lamp, known in North America as the center high mount stop light or third brake light) is a single red stop lamp at the top of the rear of the vehicle, on its vertical centreline. FMVSS 108 Table I-a requires one on passenger cars and on multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks and buses under 2032 mm wide with a GVWR of 10,000 lb or less: steady burning, lit with the service brakes and, except on passenger cars, mounted at least 34 inches high. Wider and heavier trucks, buses and trailers do not need one, so on those vehicles it is an addition the operator chooses.
Model 272 is a 7 x 2 inch LED lamp family for trucks, buses and industrial vehicles. Its CHMSL version, 0346891, is a brake light camera: it adds a rear camera to the stop lamp housing for trailering and reversing. The other four versions are stop and tail and turn signal lamps from our LED signal lights range.

Why the Model 272 Puts the Camera in the Brake Light
A CHMSL already sits high on the rear centreline, clear of the tail lamp clusters. That is also a natural position for a rear camera: high, central and looking straight back. Building the camera into the Model 272 stop lamp gives the driver that view without a second housing, bracket or hole in the body.
As a brake light reversing camera, the 0346891 is made for trailering and backing up: trucks, buses, box bodies and trailers that reverse to loading bays or in yards. The 6 m and 10 m M12 cables carry the image from the rear of the body to a monitor in the cab. For reversing at night, an LED reverse light lights the area the camera shows.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not directly. The 0346891 CHMSL with camera is the only 12V version of Model 272, with a manufacturer operating range of 9 to 18V DC. The stop and tail light and the three turn signal versions are 12-24V parts. On a 24 V truck or bus the camera CHMSL needs a 12 V supply, so state the system voltage when you request a quotation and we will confirm the supply arrangement with you.
Only on lighter vehicles. FMVSS 111 (49 CFR 571.111, as amended by the final rule of 7 April 2014) requires a rearview image on trucks, buses and multipurpose passenger vehicles with a GVWR of 4,536 kg or less built on or after 1 May 2018 (S6.2). Above 4,536 kg, S7 requires outside mirrors only. On heavy trucks, buses and trailers a camera such as the Model 272 CHMSL is therefore the fleet’s own choice, fitted where reversing visibility matters.
Choose the Model 272 CHMSL with camera when the driver needs a rear view while reversing: it sits in the brake light position and comes on with the reverse light circuit. Choose the LED work light with integrated camera (Model 4415) when the vehicle also needs to light a work area: it is a work light, offered in a side view mirror mount version with camera and used with a 7″ split-screen monitor.
FMVSS 108 (49 CFR 571.108, S6.3.1) does not allow a high-mounted stop lamp to be combined with any other lamp or reflective device except a cargo lamp, and the 0346891 is listed for the stop function only. The tail function on the same vehicle comes from the 0341811 stop and tail light, or from the LED rear lights already fitted.
