Features
- Service and blackout lighting in one unit: four service functions for normal driving and two blackout functions for driving under light discipline, so no separate blackout lamp has to be mounted at the rear.
- Reversing lamp included: the unit lights the ground behind the vehicle and warns that it is reversing, a function the compact model 420065 does not carry.
- Fewer lamps on the rear body: six functions in one housing save mounting space, brackets, drilling and cable runs on a crowded rear body or bumper.
- One plug to connect or exchange: a bayonet-coupled circular connector joins the unit to the harness, so a damaged unit can be changed quickly in the field.
- Solid-state LED: no filament to break under shock and vibration, and the stop lamps light immediately when the brakes are applied.
- Mode change at the light switch: the crew moves between service and blackout lighting from the vehicle’s light switch, with no change of hardware.
What is an LED tail light unit?
An LED tail light unit is a combined rear lamp: several lamp functions share one housing instead of being fitted as separate lamps. Model 421002 is a military rear light unit with four service functions and two blackout functions.
The service functions each do one defined job. The tail light (rear position lamp) shows the presence and width of the vehicle from behind, the brake light warns that the vehicle is slowing, the signal shows that the driver intends to turn, and the reverse light lights the ground behind the vehicle. The blackout tail light marks the rear at much reduced output under blackout conditions, and the blackout stop light takes the place of the normal brake light. Dedicated military blackout lights do the same job as separate lamps.
Tail light: lit with the service lights
Brake light: when the brakes are applied
Signal: when a turn is indicated
Reverse: when reverse is selected
Blackout tail: lit while blackout is selected
Blackout stop: when the brakes are applied
Integration and Ordering
The universal mount lets the unit replace an existing rear lamp or be designed into a new vehicle build. Check the rear body for the 146 mm by 458 mm footprint before ordering. The PT01E14-12P connector is an Amphenol PT series designation (shell size 14, 12 pin contacts), intermateable with MIL-DTL-26482 Series I connectors, so the harness needs a mating plug with socket contacts in the same insert arrangement.
State the housing colour, whether the full 3 mm protective gauge is required and the functions to be wired. For a rear layout built from single-function lamps, see our military tail lights in module form. For other rear lamp formats, see the full range of LED rear lights.
Need a Smaller Unit with Convoy Light?
The model 420065 rear light measures 114 mm by 224 mm and combines tail, brake, indicator, convoy, blackout brake and blackout position functions in one housing.

One Unit for Service and Blackout Driving
A military vehicle asks two things of its rear lighting. In service driving, the vehicle behind must see where it is, when it brakes, when it turns and when it reverses. Under blackout, the service lamps go dark and only a dim rear marker and a blackout stop signal remain, so the next vehicle in the column can hold its distance without the vehicle being seen from far away.
Model 421002 gives both from one housing on one connector. Military vehicles carry radios and sensitive electronics, and MIL-STD-461 is the US standard that controls electromagnetic interference between equipment; the unit is listed to revision E. It is also listed to MIL-STD-810F, the environmental test method standard that covers temperature, shock, vibration, rain, and sand and dust. If your programme calls up a later revision, raise it at the enquiry stage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Six: tail light, brake light, signal and reverse for service driving, and blackout stop and blackout tail for driving under blackout conditions. All six share one aluminium housing.
When blackout lighting is selected, the service lamps are off. The blackout tail light marks the rear of the vehicle at much reduced output, and the blackout stop light takes the place of the normal brake light and lights when the brakes are applied. On US military vehicles these lights are selected with the BO MARKER and BO DRIVE positions of the main light switch, and the service lights with SER DRIVE.
Model 421002 has a reversing lamp, measures 146 mm by 458 mm and connects through a PT01E14-12P connector. Model 420065 is smaller (114 mm by 224 mm), has a convoy light instead of a reversing lamp, and offers nine connector or wiring options. Choose 421002 when the reversing lamp must sit in the same housing, and 420065 when a convoy light is needed or space at the rear is limited.
PT01E14-12P. In the Amphenol PT series this is a shell size 14 receptacle with 12 pin contacts and quick-disconnect bayonet coupling, intermateable with MIL-DTL-26482 Series I connectors. The vehicle harness needs a mating plug with socket contacts in the same 14-12 insert arrangement.
IP68, MIL-STD-461E and MIL-STD-810F. IP68 means dust-tight and protected against continuous immersion. MIL-STD-461 covers electromagnetic interference, so the lamp neither disturbs nor is disturbed by radios and vehicle electronics. MIL-STD-810 is a set of tailored environmental test methods, including temperature, shock and vibration. Both standards have later revisions; if your programme requires one, state it in your enquiry.
Yes. There are 13 housing colour options, including green, tan, black, grey and white, to match vehicle paint or camouflage. An optional full 3 mm protective gauge is also available.
