Supplied Against NATO Codification
Commercial part numbers change. Manufacturers supersede them, renumber them, or discontinue them entirely, and on a platform in service for twenty years or more that becomes a genuine maintenance problem.
A NATO Stock Number does not change. It identifies one item of supply for the life of that item, which is why fleet operators maintaining legacy vehicles order against the NSN rather than a manufacturer reference.
