- Turn warning from the side: the lamp flashes with the direction indicators and shows the turn to drivers, riders and cyclists alongside the vehicle, who cannot see the front or rear indicators.
- Optional side marker function: one version adds a steady side marker on a separate wire, so a single lamp marks the side of the vehicle and signals the turn.

What is a side turn signal light?
A side turn signal light is a direction indicator mounted on the side of a vehicle. It flashes amber together with the front and rear indicators, so road users alongside see that the vehicle is about to turn or change lane. UN Regulation No. 48 calls it a side direction-indicator lamp and requires two on motor vehicles, of category 5 or 6 depending on the vehicle type and length. In North America, SAE J914 covers side turn signal lamps for vehicles under 12 m.
Model 157 is an LED side turn signal for trucks, buses, plant, agricultural machinery and support vehicles. It is one of our LED signal lights, and one version also works as a side marker lamp.
Turn Warning for Traffic Beside the Vehicle
On a truck or bus, the front and rear indicators are several metres from a car, motorcycle or cyclist travelling alongside. When the vehicle turns or changes lane, that road user may see neither lamp. A side turn signal puts the warning in their line of sight, next to the part of the vehicle that will cross their path.

Standards and Approvals
The manufacturer lists Model 157 as Buy America compliant and to ECE Regulation 6, FMVSS 108, SAE J2042, SAE J592 and SAE J914. ECE Regulation 6 covers direction indicators and ECE Regulation 91 side-marker lamps (see ECE Regulations 6, 7 and 91). FMVSS 108 is the US federal lighting standard. SAE J914 covers side turn signal lamps on vehicles under 12 m, and SAE J592 and J2042 cover clearance, side marker and identification lamps, J2042 for vehicles 2032 mm or more in overall width.
The listings differ per version: ECE Regulation 91 and the side marker function apply to the side marker and side turn signal version only. Ask us for the approval marks and test reports of the version you order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Check the requirement first. Model 157 is listed to SAE J914, which covers side turn signal lamps for vehicles under 12 m in overall length. For vehicles of 12 m or more, SAE J2039 sets higher intensity requirements, and Model 157 is not listed to it. Under ECE rules, UN Regulation No. 48 asks for category 6 side direction indicators on N2 and N3 trucks and on N1, M2 and M3 vehicles over 6 m, and category 5 on M1 cars and on N1, M2 and M3 vehicles up to 6 m. It should not. UN Regulation No. 48 requires direction indicators to show amber, and SAE J914 allows only yellow (amber) for side turn signals, because these lamps are also seen from the front. The clear lens version is a side turn signal listed to ECE Regulation 6 and SAE J914, so the lens is clear but the signal must be amber. Do not use it as a white lamp, and ask us to confirm the light colour if your specification requires it.
It can on older vehicles. An LED lamp draws far less current than a bulb, and a load-sensing flasher may read this as a failed lamp and flash fast, outside the 90 ± 30 flashes per minute that UN Regulation No. 48 sets. It should. Model 157 is a service lamp for road driving. Wire the turn lead, and on the side marker version the side lead, to the service lighting circuits, so the lamp goes dark whenever the crew selects a blackout position on the main light switch.
