LED Side Marker Lights With Turn Signal

LED Side Marker Lights With Turn Signal

Side marker turn signal lights mark the flank of a truck, trailer or armoured vehicle and repeat the turn warning to traffic alongside. This panel-mounted lamp combines both functions in one sealed aluminium housing.

It runs on 12V to 24V DC, weighs 0.3 kg, is sealed to IP 68 and is listed to MIL-STD 461E and 810F, ECE Reg 6, 7 and 91, FMVSS 108 and SAE J592, J914 and J2042. The connector is chosen per order.

Features

  • Two signals, one cut-out: the steady side marker and the flashing side turn signal share one housing, so each position on the hull or trailer body needs one panel opening, one seal and one connector.
  • Presence seen from the side: the marker shows crossing traffic and ground guides where the vehicle is at night, when the headlamps and tail lamps are out of their line of sight.
  • Turn warning on the flank: the side turn signal repeats the indicator to drivers and riders alongside, who cannot see the front and rear indicators of a long truck or trailer.
  • Fit for fording and washdown: a dust-tight lamp rated for continuous immersion keeps both functions working after water crossings, mud and pressure washing in the vehicle park.
  • Matched to your harness: the connector is chosen per order, so the lamp plugs into the existing vehicle loom without splices or adapter leads.
  • Drawn for panel preparation: the dimension drawing is shown with the specifications, so mounting panels and cut-outs can be prepared before the lamps arrive.

What is a side marker turn signal light?

It is a lamp on the side of a vehicle that does two jobs. The side marker burns steadily with the position lamps and, in the words of UN Regulation No. 48, indicates the presence of the vehicle when viewed from the side. The side turn signal is a side direction indicator: it flashes amber with the indicators on the same side. In British usage the lamp is often called a side marker with indicator.

The standards on this lamp follow the same split. ECE Reg 91, SAE J592 and SAE J2042 cover the side marker; ECE Reg 6 and SAE J914 cover the side turn signal. Our guide to ECE Regulations 6, 7 and 91 explains the colour, flash rate and category rules behind the ECE listings.

Aluminium IP 68 lamp or Model 157?
CHOOSE THIS LAMP WHEN
the lamp sits on armour, a hull or a trailer body that fords or is pressure washed: aluminium housing, sealed to IP 68, panel mount, MIL-STD 461E and 810F listings, connector chosen to suit your harness.
CHOOSE MODEL 157 WHEN
a lighter commercial lamp is enough: our side turn signal lights have an ABS housing, acrylic lens, IP67 sealing, a low-profile mount, a 12 inch flying lead and amber, clear and combined side marker versions.
Model 420022 on our LED side marker lights page lists the same housing, lens, IP 68 sealing and standards as this lamp. Send us your panel drawing and we confirm which of the two fits.

Flank Marking and Turn Warning From One Sealed Aluminium Lamp

On an armoured vehicle or a long trailer, the flank is what other traffic sees at junctions, in vehicle parks and when the vehicle pulls out of a column. This lamp puts the steady marker and the flashing side turn signal in one 0.3 kg aluminium housing, so a single panel-mounted unit per position covers both functions.

Sealing to IP 68 means dust-tight and protected against continuous immersion under IEC 60529, under conditions stated by the manufacturer; if the vehicle must ford, ask for the immersion depth and duration tested. The MIL-STD 461E listing addresses electromagnetic interference with radios and sensors on the same vehicle, and MIL-STD 810F covers environmental tests such as temperature, shock, vibration, rain, and sand and dust.

Fit the turn signal within 1,800 mm of the front

Under UN Regulation No. 48, the light-emitting surface of a side direction indicator (category 5 or 6) may be no more than 1,800 mm behind the front of the vehicle’s overall length. The limit is 2,500 mm for M1 and N1 vehicles, and for other vehicles whose structure makes the minimum visibility angles impossible. Plan the foremost lamp position on each side with that dimension before preparing the mounting panels.

UN Regulation No. 48, 06 series of amendments (Supplement 10), paragraph 6.5.4.3. Vehicles for the US market follow FMVSS 108.

Wiring the Two Functions and Ordering

Connect the marker to the position lamp circuit: UN Regulation No. 48 requires side-marker lamps to switch on and off together with the position lamps (paragraph 5.11). Connect the turn signal to the indicator circuit of the same side; direction indicators switch on independently of the other lamps, and all indicators on one side work from one control and flash in phase (paragraph 6.5.7). On vehicles with a blackout switch, wire both functions to the service lighting so the lamp goes dark in blackout.

When you request a quotation, state the connector or mating plug used on your harness, the number of lamps per side, the side direction indicator category your vehicle needs, and the approvals and test reports required for your programme. Ask for the wiring diagram of this lamp with the dimension drawing.

Frequently Asked Questions

UN Regulation No. 48 (06 series, paragraph 6.5.3) asks for category 6 side direction indicators on all N2 and N3 trucks and on N1, M2 and M3 vehicles longer than 6 metres; category 5 is for M1 cars and for N1, M2 and M3 vehicles up to 6 metres. Category 6 may replace category 5 in all cases. Name the category you need in your enquiry and we confirm the R6 category of this side marker turn signal lamp against its approval documents.

UN Regulation No. 48 (06 series) allows it: paragraph 5.11.1.2 makes an exception to the rule that side-marker lamps switch only with the position lamps when they flash in conjunction with the direction indicators. Whether this side marker turn signal lamp is wired for steady marking only or for marking plus flashing depends on how the two functions are brought out at the connector, so tell us which behaviour your vehicle needs and ask for the wiring diagram.

Yes. The connector is an order option, and custom connectors are possible. Send the mating connector part number, or a drawing of the harness end, with your enquiry, together with the cable length you need behind the mounting panel. Fitting the right connector at the factory avoids splices at the hull or trailer body, where water and vibration cause most lamp failures.

Not automatically. The lamp is listed to MIL-STD-461E and MIL-STD-810F. MIL-STD-810F dates from 2000 and has been followed by 810G (2008) and 810H (2019); MIL-STD-461 is now at revision H, issued in April 2026, after 461G (2015). If your contract names a later revision, ask for the test reports of this lamp and we tell you which tests they cover, so your test authority can decide whether a delta test is needed.
